Visitor attractions in the Netherlands - Statistics & Facts

Published by Statista Research Department,
Leisure is an important part of daily life and is defined as the usage of free time for enjoyment. It includes activities for pleasure which are not work-related. One way of spending leisure time is visiting attractions, such as theme parks, museums, or zoos. For many this is escaping from work or personal worries.

To start, the majority of attractions that were visited in 2019 fell within the category museums and zoos/natural parks. Approximately 32 percent of the visited attractions were museums, whereas just over 28 percent of visitors went to zoos or natural parks. 16.9 percent, on the other hand, were visits related to theme parks. Observing the number of international tourists visiting attractions in the Netherlands, Zaanse Schans near Amsterdam attracted the most. In 2019, roughly 2.2 million international guests visited the location known for its old windmills.

Theme parks

Taking nine of the largest amusement parks in the Netherlands, a day out cost on average 28.45 euros per ticket in 2019. Efteling was the most expensive park at 40 euros per person, whereas Plopsa Indoor Hasselt/ Coevorden the least expensive at roughly 20 euros. However, Efteling is, besides being the most expensive park, also the most popular one. In 2019, approximately 5.26 million people visited the theme park in Kaatsheuvel. Furthermore, it is highly likely that the number of visitors is going to increase in the future, as Efteling aims to reach 7 million visitors in 2030 by expanding size and attractions.

Looking at zoos in the Netherlands, the 10 most visited attracted approximately 9.34 million visitors combined in 2018. The most popular zoos were situated in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands located north of the harbor city, saw its visitor volume amount to roughly 1.43 million and was the most visited zoo in 2018. Artis Amsterdam, the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, attracted 1.41 million people and ranked second.

Individuals seeking a dose of culture could choose out of roughly a thousand museums in the Netherlands in 2018. Some of the most popular were the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum, both located in Amsterdam in the famous Museum quarter. The Rijksmuseum is a museum dedicated to the arts and history of Amsterdam and the collection contains more than 2,000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, including the famous Night Watch by Rembrandt. The museum attracted approximately 2.67 million visitors in 2019. The Van Gogh museum, on the other hand, registered roughly 2.1 million visitors. The museum owns the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings in the world.

One attraction that did not fit in the aforementioned categories, but worth noting is Keukenhof. The flower park around Amsterdam, famous for its large tulip fields, is very popular among international tourists. In 2019, approximately 1.5 million people visited Keukenhof, of which roughly 1.23 million were foreign.
